Alcatraz
is the Spanish word for pelican. The island was first used as a prison
by the U.S. Army during the Civil War. In 1934, the Federal Government
opened a maximum security prison on the island that was in operation
until closing in 1963. The island is now part of the Golden Gate
National Recreational Area. Park Rangers conduct guided tours daily. |

1990, the state of California set aside the waterfront between the
streets of Taylor and Leavenworth as a dock for commercial fishing
boats. Today this 45-acre shopping and dining area showcases fine

Opened in 1937, this 4,200-foot long structure connecting San
Francisco and Marin County was known as "the bridge that couldn't be
built." With its intricate design and intriguing setting, the Golden
Gate Bridge is one of the most photographed man-made structures in the
world. |

John McLaren, Master Botanist and Landscaper, turned this 1, 017-acre
sand wasteland into one of the world's most beautiful parks. The park,
which contains thousands of trees and shrubs, a variety of landscaped
gardens, two waterfalls, 11 lakes and 40 picnic areas, lets visitors
escape the "city rush" and enjoy nature. The park is also home of
Conservatory of Flowers, a spectacular living museum of rare and
beautiful tropical plants. |
